Watchingwell Halt railway station
Watchingwell Halt, was an intermediate station on the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway, situated near the hamlet of Upper Watchingwell,〔Pomeroy, C,A "Isle Of Wight Railways, Then and Now": Oxford,Past & Present Publishing, 1993, ISBN 0-947971-62-9〕 that started life as a private halt. It was built at the bequest of Sir John Barrington Simeon, M.P for Southampton,〔Maycock,R.J/Silsbury,R: The Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway: Usk, Oakwood, 2003 ISBN 0-85361-601-9〕 in 1897, not included in timetables available to the general public until the creation of the Southern in 1923,〔Bennett,A "Southern Holiday Lines in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight": Cheltenham, Runpast 1994 ISBN 1-870754-31-X〕 de-staffed in 1948 and closed in 1953.〔Hay,P "Steaming Through the Isle Of Wight": Midhurst,Middleton, 1988 ISBN 0-906520-56-8〕 It was, by its very nature, a sparsely used station.
